St. Mark’s wins Maverick Challenge and climbs to 4th in the Race for State!

St. Mark’s School (Dallas) won the Texas Quiz Bowl Maverick Challenge this past weekend. St. Mark’s defeat St. John’s in the final. In the middle school division, Kealing Middle (Austin) defeated Beck Junior High (Katy) in the final. Full Stats are available. With this victory St. Mark’s earned an automatic bid to the 13th Annual Texas Quiz Bowl Championship and climbed  to 4th place in the Race for State points rankings.

Nation’s best quiz bowl teams coming to Houston!

Texas Quiz Bowl is proud to announce that on February 17-19, 2012 we will be hosting our third annual Texas Invitational at St. John’s School. Teams from across the country (including 11 of the current top 20) will be participating. The participanting schools include: #1 Centennial (GA), #2 Hunter (NY), #3 Bellarmine (CA), #5 Seven Lakes (TX), #6 Dorman (SC), #7 IMSA (IL), #9 Detroit Catholic Central (MI), #10 Loyola (IL), #13 LASA (TX), #15 Cistercian (TX), #18 Georgetown Day (DC). The preliminary schedule of events is available. In total teams from 8 states and and a college squad from Canada will be coming to Houston for the contest.

TQBA is currently looking for middle school and junior varsity student volunteers for this event. If you are currently in grades 7-10, enjoy quiz bowl, and would like to watch some of the best teams in the nation duke it out, please email me at romeroc-at-gmail-dot-com. In particular we are looking for scorekeepers on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.

TQBA invites all Middle Schools and Junior Highs to upcoming events

Texas Quiz Bowl invites all Texas middle schools and junior highs to participate in two upcoming events. The first will be the Maverick Challenge on February 11th at St. John’s in Houston. Full details for this event are available here.

The second event is the upcoming 3rd Annual Texas Middle School Championship that will be held at Beck Junior High on March 10th.

Maverick Challenge set for Feb 11th

This year’s edition of the Maverick Challenge will be in held at St. John’s School in Houston on February 11, 2012 and will feature both varsity and middle school divisions. Registration is now open. Full tournament details are available here. We hope to see many teams in February.

Cistercian repeats as Winter Rodeo Champion!

For the 2nd straight year Cistercian defeated Seven Lakes in the finals of TQBA Winter Rodeo. LASA made a strong showing placing 4 teams into the quarter finals. The other two quarterfinalists were Bellaire & St. Marks. Full Stats are available here.

With 9 victories Seven Lakes claimed the lead in TQBA’s Race for State. Teams have just 4 more opportunities to earn points towards State Qualification: Maverick (Feb 11), St. Mark’s (Mar 3), Bluebonnet (Mar 31), and Bexar (Apr 14).

Kealing wins Junior Rodeo

Kealing Middle School (Austin) took the top two spots in the recent TQBA Junior Rodeo. The Kealing teams defeated teams from host St. John’s Middle (Houston) and Beck Junior High (Katy) in the semifinals. Stats are posted. The next TQBA middle school event, the Maverick Challenge, will be on February 11th and the 3rd Annual Texas Middle School Championship will be held on March 10th.

Junior Rodeo for Middle School and J.V. squads to be held on Saturday!

Happy New Year! Our first quiz bowl event of the year, Junior Rodeo, will be this coming Saturday January 7th at St. John’s in Houston. This event is open to both Junior Varsity Groups (9th and 10th graders) and Middle School teams.

Thus far 17 middle school and 7 junior varsity squads have already signed up to participate. Junior Varsity teams will earn points for their schools towards qualifying for the 13th annual Texas Quiz Bowl Championship.
