Hosting

Texas Quiz Bowl is always looking for event hosts. Here are some details regarding our typical hosting arrangements.

Basics

  1. TQBA officials generally arrive at 7:00 a.m. for tournament setup and clean-up is done by 6:00 p.m.
  2. TQBA tournaments require 10-20 classrooms with moveable desks for quiz bowl matches.
  3. TQBA tournaments require 1 larger venue (e.g. cafeteria, auditorium, commons) for morning meeting and lunch

Classroom Setup

  • A number of classrooms (to be specified on Friday morning) should be setup on Friday afternoon.
  • Each classroom should be arranged with two desks (for moderator and scorekeeper) facing the door.
  • These two desks should be near a wall outlet.
  • Eight student desks should be arranged in either a “V” or “Parallel Line” formation.
  • Student desks should face away from the entrance door; in other words audience members should enter the room outside of view of the players.

Large Venue

  • The large venue can be in almost any formation
  • Students will need some place in order to eat lunch so a table and chair setup is optimal
  • The opening meeting venue and lunch venue need not be the same location.
  • The availability of a microphone and a stage are both optimal though not required for large venue.

Concessions

  • Texas Quiz Bowl offers hosts the option of running a concession stand.
  • All profits from a locally run concession stand go to the hosting school.
  • If a locally run, concession stand is not possible, Texas Quiz Bowl requests that we be allowed to run a minimal stand with drinks and candy.
