Seven Lakes wins TQBA Championship

Congratulations to Seven Lakes High School (Katy) which won the 13th annual Texas Quiz Bowl Championship this weekend in Houston. The Championship tournament was the culmination of the Race for State, a series of 10 events contested across the state during the 2011-2012 season.

Seven Lakes defeated runner-up St. Mark’s in the final of the two-day event to complete its 11-0 run to the state title. Cistercian, St. John’s, and St. Stephen’s rounded out the top 5. The stats from today’s tournament are here.

The Championship was contested on questions previously used at this year’s NAQT Intercollegiate Championship Tournament. The Texas Quiz Bowl championship is the most challenging state contest in the nation. Next year’s Quiz Bowl season kicks off at Westside High School on September 08, 2012.

Quiz Bowl Camp filling up

Texas Quiz Bowl Camp, which will run from July 29th through August 4th in College Station, is filling up. We expect that our available spots will fill before the June 1st registration deadline. All students interested in participating are encouraged to sign up soon. Quiz Bowl camp is held at the Tradition dorm. Our camp is open to students entering grades 6 through 12. TQBA announces Fall 2012 schedule; adds Freshmen Division

Texas Quiz Bowl is proud to announce its Fall 2012 schedule. This schedule includes 11 events commencing with our Middle School Kickoff on September 8th and culminating with the fifth edition of the Houston Holiday Hoedown on December 8th.

In 2012, Texas Quiz Bowl will introduce a Freshmen division (designated FISH below). Events on September 8th, October 20th, and December 1st will allow freshmen teams to earn points towards qualifying for the first ever Texas Quiz Bowl Freshmen Championship to be held on May 3-4, 2013 in coordination with the 14th annual Texas Quiz Bowl Championship.

In 2011 Texas Quiz Bowl hosted its first challenge events. These events are intended for newbie varsity players of all ages. This fall TQBA plans to host challenge events in Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, and south and east sites yet to be named.

The schedule includes three varsity events (Kickoff, Aggie Bowl, HoHoHo), the three Freshmen events that will take place in parallel with three middle school events (Kickoff, Unnamed, and Hoedown) and the 5 challenge events. Please note that all events are subject to change. Please check this website for updates on hosts and dates.

Kealing takes 2nd consecutive MSNCT! Holy Family & T.H. Rogers place in top 25

The Kealing Middle School (Austin) team of Ethan Russo, Jonathan Sadun, Jonah Shaukat, and Corin Wagen won the 2012 Middle School National Championship Tournament on Sunday, April 22nd in Chicago. Congratulations to Coach Patty Hill and Kealing on their 2nd consecutive Championship.

Three Kealing squads placed in the top 10, leaving little doubt that they are Quiz Bowl’s most dominant Middle School program. Holy Family placed 11th in the competition and T.H. Rogers placed 17th. In total Texas placed 5 squads in the top 25.

Texas Quiz Bowl is proud to offer schools the opportunity to purchase Zee Craft Buzzers. Every TQBA event offers a $35 buzzer discount. A carrying case is included with each system. The following system configurations are available:

Reagan joins qualifiers for Texas Championship

With 5 victories at Bexar Bowl, Reagan High School clinched a birth at the 13th annual Texas Quiz Bowl Championship on May 5th. Reagan moved into 15th place in the Race for State and joined St. John’s, Seven Lakes, Cistercian, LASA, St. Mark’s, Harmony, Westside, Bellaire, Kinkaid, St. Stephen’s, Antonian, Village, Temple, O’Connor, and George Ranch as state qualifiers. The 16 teams will vie for the Texas Championship on May 4-5 in Houston.

LASA wins Bexar Bowl

On April 14th, twenty-two teams from San Antonio, Houston, and Austin completed in TQBA’s final 2011-2012 regular season event, Bexar Bowl, at Antonian College Prep. LASA Silver won the event after defeating four other Austin area foes in the playoffs: Harmony B, Harmony A, LASA Purple, and St. Stephens. Full Statistics are available here.

Kealing Middle wins State Championship

On Saturday, March 31st Kealing Middle School (Austin) won its third consecutive State Championship. Kealing’s top team went 11-0 in the round robin and bested teams from 9 other schools. Full Statistics are available here. Two class of 2016 students, Corin Wagen and Ethan Russo, lead the Kealing team to a dominating performance including 87 powers over 11 games. The 2012 TQBA Varsity State Championship will be held on May 4-5, 2012 at Texas A&M University.
