In conjunction with the San Antonio Express News and Trinity University, Texas Quiz Bowl is pleased to announce that we will host the Alamo City Quiz Bowl tournament on October 22, 2011 at Northrup Hall at Trinity. This tournament is open to all San Antonio area high schools but limited to the first 24 registering teams.
Quiz Bowl is a academics-based game in which two teams of four students compete to answer questions about math, science, history, literature, religion, and arts. Students buzz in to answer tossup questions and correct tossup responses are rewarded with an opportunity to answer 3 bonus questions that cannot be stolen by the opposing team. The team with the most points after 20 tossup-bonus pairs is the winner. More information about quiz bowl can be found on our What is Quiz Bowl? page.
This tournament is being organized and directed by veteran Texas Quiz Bowl official and San Antonio Express News copy editor Steve Fontenot. Questions can be directed to Steve at sfontenot@express-news.net. Teams that wish to register for the event may email their school name, faculty sponsor, team member names and grades, and contact information to that same email address.
On tournament morning Teams are asked to register at Trinity at 8 a.m. in Northrup Room 040. A campus map is available here. We will have a brief meeting and start our first matches around 9:00 a.m. Each team will play 6 matches and have two byes during 9 rounds of preliminary play. A pizza lunch will be served between preliminary rounds 6 and 7. After the prelims the top 8 teams will advance to a seeded single elimination playoff. The winning team at this tournament will qualify to represent the San Antonio area at the 13th annual Texas Quiz Bowl State Championship on May 5, 2012. The top 4 teams will qualify to attend the High School National Championship Tournament in Atlanta on Memorial Day Weekend.
