Texas Quiz Bowl is pleased to announce that we will host our first event for 2012, the Junior Winter Rodeo on January 7, 2012 at St. John’s School in Houston. This tournament is open to all Texas high school students in grades 10 or lower. This tournament will have two divisions: Junior Varsity for grades 9-10 and Middle School for grades 8 or below. Middle School teams may choose to play in the Junior Varsity division.

Quiz Bowl is a academics-based game in which two teams of four students compete to answer questions about math, science, history, literature, religion, and arts. Students buzz in to answer tossup questions and correct tossup responses are rewarded with an opportunity to answer 3 bonus questions that cannot be stolen by the opposing team. The team with the most points after 20 tossup-bonus pairs is the winner.

This tournament is being organized and directed by Texas Quiz Bowl director Chris Romero. Teams that wish to register for the event may email their school name, faculty sponsor, team member names and grades, and contact information to Chris at romeroc@gmail.com.

On tournament morning Teams are asked to register at 8 a.m. in Room W-205 which is located near the parking lot nearest the corner of Westheimer and Buffalo Speedway (When you enter the upper school gate take your first right).  We will have a brief meeting at 8:45 and start our first matches around 9:00 a.m. Each team will play 6 matches during preliminary round play. Pizza will be available for pre-order on tournament morning and drinks and concessions will be available during our 30-minute lunch break after round 6. A pre-order form for Pizza can be found here. You can turn this it with your money at the registration desk on tournament morning.

After the prelims the top teams will advance to a seeded single elimination playoff. The fee for this event is $125 per team with a $35 discount available for teams bringing a working buzzer system. Teams will be required to submit a roster form on tournament morning. Teams can play this tournament for free through a special buzzer deal.

The middle school division of this tournament will be a qualifier for the NAQT Middle School National Championship Tournament. The Junior varsity division will not be a qualifier for the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament.  Junior Varsity teams entered in this event will earn 1/2 point per win towards qualification for the Texas Quiz Bowl Varsity State Championship Tournament.
