The TQBA Viking Invasion will take place on October 7, 2017 at the Village School (2005 Gentryside Drive, Houston, TX 77077). This event is open to middle school and elementary school teams. This tournament will use NAQT sets MS-23. A sample middle school packet is available.
Quiz Bowl is an academics-based game in which two teams of four students compete to answer questions about math, science, history, literature, religion, and arts. Students buzz in to answer tossup questions and correct tossup responses are rewarded with an opportunity to answer 3 bonus questions that cannot be stolen by the opposing team. The team with the most points after 20 tossup-bonus pairs is the winner.
This event will feature three divisions: varsity, junior varsity, and middle school. The varsity division is an open division. Any team can choose to play in the open division. The junior varsity division is limited to teams of students currently enrolled in the 9th or 10th grade. The middle school division is limited to teams of students currently in a grade no higher than 8th. All groups will play the same questions.
Check-in for the event will begin at 8 a.m. on tournament morning. An opening meeting will start at approximately 8:45. Each team in the contest will play 6 preliminary matches. Following preliminary rounds, top teams will be seeded by win-loss record into a single elimination playoff bracket.
The base fee for a regular-season TQBA middle school tournament is $120. There is a $10 discount available for bringing a fully functional buzzer lock-out system with at least 8 working buzzers. There is a $10 late fee assessed for teams who do not pay before the event begins. For schools who have not played in a TQBA event in the past three years, there is no entry fee for that school’s first team.
Pizza for lunch can be pre-ordered at the tournament site the morning of the event for $10 per one-topping large. Registration is open and can be done via the NAQT registration page for this tournament. A current list of teams registered for the event can be found here.
We expect the top eight teams from this event to qualify for the 2017 NAQT Middle School National Championship Tournament to be held in Chicago on Mother’s Day Weekend.
