On October 25, 2014, Texas Quiz Bowl will host its Metroplex Challenge event at the University of Texas at Dallas. This event is open to all high school teams and will be contested with questions from NAQT IS-138.
Quiz Bowl is an academics-based game in which two teams of four students compete to answer questions about math, science, history, literature, religion, and arts. Students buzz in to answer tossup questions and correct tossup responses are rewarded with an opportunity to answer 3 bonus questions that cannot be stolen by the opposing team. The team with the most points after 20 tossup-bonus pairs is the winner. A sample packet of questions is available at this link.
This tournament will feature a single open high school division. Entry fee information for 2014-15 is available in this post. Entry is free for the first team from any school who has never participated in a TQBA contest. Registration is open and can be done by email to email@example.com. Pizza for lunch can be pre-ordered at the tournament site the morning of the event for $10 per one-topping large.
Check-in for the event will begin at 8 a.m. on tournament morning. An opening meeting will start at approximately 8:45. Each team in the contest will play 6 preliminary matches. Following preliminary rounds, teams will be seeded by win-loss record into a single elimination playoff bracket. Plaques will be awarded to the top 4 teams.
Every team will earn points towards attending the 16th Annual Texas Quiz Bowl Championship to be held on April 11, 2015. The winning team of this event will automatically qualify to attend the 16th Annual Texas Quiz Bowl Championship. The top four teams from this event will qualify to attend the prestigious Texas Invitational to be held on March 28-29 in San Antonio. This event is attended by some of the top high school quiz bowl teams from across the nation.
