10/18 Houston MS Kickoff

Texas Quiz Bowl will host its Houston middle school kickoff at T.H. Rogers School (5840 San Felipe St, Houston, TX 77057) on  October 18, 2014.  This event is open to all middle school teams and will be contested with questions from NAQT MS-11. A sample middle school series packet is available. Dr. Romero (cromero@texasquizbowl.org) will be the tournament director for this event. Registration is open and can be done by emailing Dr. Romero.

Quiz Bowl is an academics-based game in which two teams of four students compete to answer questions about math, science, history, literature, religion, and arts. Students buzz in to answer tossup questions and correct tossup responses are rewarded with an opportunity to answer 3 bonus questions that cannot be stolen by the opposing team. The team with the most points after 20 tossup-bonus pairs is the winner.

Logistics

Check-in for the event will begin at 8 a.m. on tournament morning. An opening meeting will start at approximately 8:45. Each team in the contest will play 6 preliminary matches. Following preliminary rounds, teams will be seeded by win-loss record into a single elimination playoff bracket.

Between preliminary rounds and playoff rounds a brief lunch break will happen. Pizza for lunch can be pre-ordered at the tournament site the morning of the event for $10 per one-topping large. There will not be enough time to leave the tournament site for lunch. Teams not opting for pizza should make alternate arrangements.

The top teams from this event will qualify for the 2015 NAQT Middle School National Championship Tournament to be held in Dallas the weekend of May 9, 2015 . Every school that attend this event will qualify to participate in the sixth annual Texas Quiz Bowl Middle Grades Championships that will be contested on April 25, 2015.
