On October 4, 2014, Texas Quiz Bowl will host its first Quiz Bowl event of the year in the San Antonio area. The Alamo City Kickoff will be hosted at Tom Clark High School in Northside ISD (5150 DeZavala, San Antonio 78249). This event is open to high school teams from San Antonio and South Texas. Statewide teams may request admission; eligibility will be determined by TQBA.
Quiz Bowl is a academics-based game in which two teams of four students compete to answer questions about math, science, history, literature, religion, and arts. Students buzz in to answer tossup questions and correct tossup responses are rewarded with an opportunity to answer 3 bonus questions that cannot be stolen by the opposing team. The team with the most points after 20 tossup-bonus pairs is the winner.
Base fee for regular-season high-school tournaments: $140
Discount for supplying a working buzzer: $15 per buzzer used
Discount per team for schools attending HSNCT last year: $10
Minimum per-team fee for HS: $110
For schools which have not played a TQBA event in the past three years, there is no entry fee for that school’s first team. Registration is open and can be done by email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Pizza for lunch can be pre-ordered at the tournament site the morning of the event for $10 per one-topping large.
Check-in for the event will begin at 8 a.m. on tournament morning. An opening meeting will start at approximately 8:45. Each team in the contest will play 6 preliminary matches. Following preliminary rounds, teams will be seeded by win-loss record into a single elimination playoff bracket. Plaques will be awards to the top 8 teams.
We anticipate that the top 4 Division I teams from this event will qualify for the 2015 NAQT High School National Championship Tournament to be held in Chicago. Every team will earn points towards attending the 16th Annual Texas Quiz Bowl Championship to be held on April 11, 2015. The winning team of this event will automatically qualify to attend the 16th Annual Texas Quiz Bowl Championship. The top four teams from this event will qualify to attend the prestigious Texas Invitational to be held on March 28-29 in San Antonio. This event is attended by some of the top high school quiz bowl teams from across the nation.
Any team playing the Alamo City Kickoff cannot play the Kickoff Classic the following weekend in Houston.
