The 2018 Texas Quiz Bowl Middle Grades Championships will be contested on March 24, 2017 at Stake Jesuit College Prep (8900 Bellaire Blvd, 77036) in Houston. This contest will use questions from NAQT IS-175A. Here is a sample packet of questions of this level. For this event, we ask that schools mail in their entry fees prior to the event. Invoices can be provided upon registration. You may register via our online registration form.

Divisions, Formats, & Fees
Championship
The Championship Division is open to one team from each middle school in the state of Texas. All players must have progressed no higher than 8th grade. This division will include a maximum of 32 teams. Each team will play a split round robin before three playoff games. Playoff games will be followed by an (advantaged, if necessary) final between the top 2 teams. Each team will play a minimum of 10 games. The fee for the championship division is $175 and includes a pizza buffet lunch for 5. Additional lunches are $10. A $10 buzzer discount is available for this event.
Open
The Open Division is open to teams (one or more) from each middle school in the state of Texas. All players must have progressed no higher than 8th grade. Each team will play at minimum of 6 games. The fee for the championship division is $175 and includes a pizza buffet lunch for 5. Additional lunches are $10.
Elementary
The Elementary Division is open to teams from each elementary school in the state of Texas. All players must have progressed no higher than 6th grade. Spots will be assigned on a first-come first-served basis. Each team should expect to play a minimum of 7 games. The fee for the elementary division is $125 and includes a pizza buffet lunch for 5. Additional lunches are $10. The match format of this division will deviate slightly from the TQBA standard. Please note that state championship level questions will be challenging.
Catholic & Parochial
The Catholic & Parochial Division is open to teams (one or more) from middle schools with a religious tradition. All players must have progressed no higher than 8th grade. Each team will play at minimum of 6 games. The fee for the championship division is $125 and includes a pizza buffet lunch for 5. Additional lunches are $10.
Freshman
The Freshman division is open exclusively to teams (one or more) of 9th grade students. There is no charge for participation in the freshman division.

About Quiz Bowl
Quiz Bowl is a academics-based game in which two teams of four students compete to answer questions about math, science, history, literature, religion, and arts. Students buzz in to answer tossup questions and correct tossup responses are rewarded with an opportunity to answer 3 bonus questions that cannot be stolen by the opposing team. The team with the most points after 20 tossup-bonus pairs is the winner.
Tournament Morning Procedures
Check in for this event will be in Agee Hall between 8:00 and 8:30.  There will be a coach’s meeting at 8:40. The first matches will start a 9:00. The tournament should be complete by 6:00 p.m.
