Texas Quiz Bowl Winter Training Camp
December 27-31, 2009

In preparation for the selection of a state team to represent Texas in the 2010 HSAPQ National All-Star Academic Tournament, the Texas Quiz Bowl Alliance is pleased to announce a winter training camp for Texas secondary high school quiz bowl players. Though this camp is not required for selection to the all-state team, it is highly recommended.

The camp will be held from December 27th through December 31st in College Station at the Tradition at Northgate (301 Church Ave. 77840). Students will report to the Tradition the afternoon of December 27th. The camp will start out with practice matches that evening. On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, students will take part in a variety of quiz bowl related activities from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. In addition to hours of game play practice, camp activities will include sessions on game play strategy, buzzing technique, and an effective approach to mastering individual question categories. Students will collaboratively research quiz bowl topics and will assess each other's progress through peer review. Students are allowed to drive themselves to the camp, and parking is available (for a nominal cost), but student drivers must surrender their car keys during the camp. Students will depart the afternoon of December 31st.

The fee for the camp is $160 per student, which includes sleeping accommodations, continental breakfast in the morning, and curriculum materials. The fee will not include lunch and dinner. The camp location is across University Avenue from Texas A&M University and is within walking distance of a number of local food establishments. Each day students will be given an hour to get lunch of their choice, and each evening the group will eat dinner together at an area restaurant. Students are encouraged to bring laptop computers (with Ethernet cables), alarm clocks, snacks, a blanket, and non-electronic entertainment (e.g. Frisbee, cards). Students are not allowed to bring video game consoles or televisions, and they will be asked to avoid playing any computer video games during their time at the training camp. The use of cell phones should be kept to a minimum.

Registration for this camp will begin immediately. An email to romeroc-at-gmail.com is all that is required for initial registration. The information requested by the student data form should be included with email registration if a student has not previously submitted the student data form. A non-refundable deposit of $50 should be sent within a week of email registration. The full fee is due December 1st along with student health form. This camp is limited to thirty participants. Students are encouraged to register as soon as possible to reserve their spot. Checks should be made payable to Texas Quiz Bowl and mailed to:
