2012 Quiz Bowl Summer Camp: July 29 — August 4

Texas Quiz Bowl will host its third annual summer quiz bowl camp from Sunday July 29, 2012 to Saturday August 4, 2012. The camp will once again be held at the Tradition dorm in College Station, Texas. In 2011 36 students participated in the camp and we expect a group of 64 in 2012. A recap of our 2011 camp can be found here and pictures can be found here.

Our 2012 camp is open to all Texas students who will be entering grades 7 through 12 for the 2012-2013 school year. 64 spots are available (32 high school, 32 middle school). Students will participate in activities from 8:30 a.m. each morning to 8:30 p.m. each night. These activities will include category-specific classroom instruction, tournament match play in which students will hone their teamwork on bonuses, directed practice in which counselors will work with students on toss-up skills, and discussions on quiz bowl theory and strategy. Camp will offer 10 different courses for high school students to choose from and 2 specifically for middle school students. Each course will include 5 days of instructional complete with instructional materials and a brief homework assignment.

Potential for Improvement

The camp teaches study methods developed at Texas A&M from 2001 to 2006. Those methods helped A&M win the 2006 ACF National Championship. The same methods have shown the promise of dramatic improvement with high school teams. One team whose members attended the 2010 Texas Quiz Bowl Camp produced the following stat lines at two consecutive high school national championships:

Event Points P TU I PPB PP20TH
’11 HSNCT 5320 71 85 7 22.05 468.7
’10 HSNCT 2930 20 90 10 16.18 284.5

Please note that both these stat lines are from 10 matches. The camp’s study program helped this team to an improvement of more than 5 powers per game and almost 6 points per bonus.

We can specifically look at two students who attended the 2010 HSNCT before attending camp and the 2011 HSNCT after attending camp:

Student A

Event P TU I PP20TH
After camp 15 15 1 32.60
Before camp 0 9 0 8.74

Student B

Event P TU I PP20TH
After camp 29 53 2 84.14
Before camp 9 43 4 52.91

Our camp study methods helped these students develop a study program that led to great improvement. Students who come to camp and follow through with a camp-inspired study program of their own can find similar results.

Logistics

All study materials available at the camp are generated based on Texas Quiz Bowl’s extensive database of quiz bowl questions. This database is the most comprehensive in the nation and is the most applicable to quiz bowl study. This database helped the 2011 Texas All-State team capture the All-Star National Championship. Each camper will be assigned to a private bedroom and will share a bathroom with one other camper. All classes and sessions will be held at the Tradition. Breakfast and Dinner at the Traditions’ Edge Cafe along with all study materials and necessary supplies are provided. Each day the campers will take part in a lunch excursion to a nearby eatery. The cost of lunch is not included. Students may opt out of lunch excursions.Students will not only learn the facts they will need to be successul in quiz bowl, they will also learn about study strategy, team work, and planning for championship caliber results. Recreational activities will be offered each day and numerous breaks through the day will keep the students fresh and focused. As you prepare for the camp we suggest you consider bringing the following: alarm clock, laptop/ipad, pillow, blanket, towel(s), soap, shampoo, swimming gear, snacks, bottled water.

Staff

The camp will be staffed by adult professionals and recently graduated Texas Quiz Bowl veterans. Parents may expect a staff to student ratio of approximately 8 to 1. The vast majority of activities will take place at the Traditions facility. During the camp no student is allowed to leave the Traditions facility without a staff escort.
